Course Description

Come learn first-hand and on the ground about the exciting ocean engineering research being conducted right in our backyard. FAU’s SeaTech marks its 23rd anniversary in 2022. The last two decades have been a period of sustained sponsored research activity, culminating in an aggregate of over $60 million in research expenditures and several technology breakthroughs, together with granting of over 400 degrees in ocean engineering, including 180 at the graduate level. SeaTech has a niche in Naval engineering, marine materials, corrosion and renewable energy research. The NSWC-CD facility next door and its permitted offshore SFTF range offer significant advantages for pursuing unmanned underwater vehicle and other at-sea based research activities, including collaborative research opportunities with NSWC-CD and student interactions with practicing ocean Navy engineers. The Institute is comprised of research centers and laboratories that currently support focused sponsored research and technology development in the areas of acoustics and vibrations, marine vehicles, hydrodynamics and physical oceanography, marine materials, control and automation, and nanocomposites.
On this tour, we will explore some of the recent funded research and development projects, including AUV-based BOSS sonar systems, ocean energy technologies, high-speed underwater modem communication, air-deployable buoy, durability of composite materials, nanocomposites, energy efficient advanced hull ship concepts, sea basing technologies, T-craft assessment tools and biomimetic underwater robots. These projects complement basic research in underwater acoustic transmission, flow noise, corrosion and marine material and structures, hydrodynamics, and physical oceanography, and in support of training and development of a new generation of ocean engineering workforce.
