Course Description

This lecture series presents the life of Gertrude Stein and the many artists and writers that formed her circle in Paris. An early collector of Matisse, Picasso, and other artists who gathered in the home on the Left Bank she shared with Alice B. Toklas, Stein and her brother, Leo, helped shape Modern Art. Meanwhile, she was writing fiction, poetry, plays, and operas in a revolutionary style from the perspective of a lesbian bohemian, and after the Great War, her home became a hangout for major Modernist writers, including Hemingway and Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. When war broke out again and Germany invaded, Stein as a Jewish American endured the horrors of the Nazi invasion even as she enjoyed her international celebrity. After living a full and historic life, she left behind an unequaled legacy in art, writing, feminism, Jewish experience, and LGBTQ history.

Lectures

  1. Writers' Beginnings: The first lecture follows Stein's literary and sexual awakening through youth and college to her arrival in Paris.
  2. Art Collector and Patron: This second lecture details Stein's art collecting and describes the salon that brought together major artists of the moment.
  3. Writing and Writers: The third lecture examines Stein's mentoring of Modernist writers and her own achievement of fame as a writer.
  4. The End and the Legacy: This final lecture presents Stein's final years during World War II and her legacy.
