Integrative Medicine; a New Paradigm in Patient Care
Course Description
How are healing and wellness most effectively achieved? Are complementary and alternative medical practices compatible with conventional medicine? Join Dr. Drowos and Dr. Borja in addressing the defining principles of integrative medicine as a specialty and it’s unique relationship to primary care and complementary or alternative therapies. Indications for seeking integrative treatment, as well as the supporting evidence for therapies available at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health at FAU, will be explored. Acupuncture and osteopathic manipulation will be highlighted as examples. Attendees will have the option to ask general questions of the panel, identifying steps to optimize health outcomes.Course Info

About the Instructor

Dr. Joanna Drowos is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University. She serves as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and the Director for the Clinical and Preventive Medicine Clerkship for the third-year curriculum. Her scholarly interests include public health and preventive medicine, primary care focused curricula and faculty development for community-based preceptors. Dr. Drowos earned her DO and Master of Public Health Degrees at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is board certified in Preventive Medicine, Family Medicine and Medical Quality. She earned her Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Administration from Florida Atlantic University in 2008. Her scholarly interests include public health and preventive medicine, primary care focused curricula and faculty development for community-based preceptors.
Dr. N. Anton Borja, is the Director for the newly established Marcus Institute of Integrative Health at FAU Medicine. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Integrated Medical Sciences at Florida Atlantic University, Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. Dr. Borja is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and has been practicing Integrative Medicine and acupuncture for the past twenty years. Before coming to FAU, Hhe was previously the Division Director of Integrative Medicine at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Medical Director of Integrative Oncology at The Ohio State University James Comprehensive Cancer Center and Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center as well as Clinical Assistant Professor in The Ohio State University, Department of Family Medicine. He received his D.O. from A.T. Still University, School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona and , and completed Internship at Columbia University, New York – Presbyterian Hospital and Family medicine residency at East Tennessee State University. Dr. Borja received his Master’s in Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine from Yo San University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Los Angeles and. He did post-doctoral training in Medical aAcupuncture and Integrative mMedicine at the UCLA Center for East West Medicine.
